Mother Milky way Chapter - 4
Planet Mercury
Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun and is the smallest planet in our solar system. It is named after the Roman messenger god Mercury. Mercury is a rocky planet with a heavily cratered surface, similar in appearance to our Moon. Its surface is also covered with cliffs, ridges, and impact craters.
Here are some quick facts about Mercury:
Distance from the Sun: 57.91 million km (0.39 AU)
Diameter: 4,880 km
Day length: 58.6 Earth days (one day on Mercury is equal to 58.6 Earth days)
Year length: 88 Earth days (the time it takes for Mercury to orbit the Sun)
Average surface temperature: 167 °C (333 °F) during the day and -183 °C (-298 °F) at night
Mercury has a very thin atmosphere, which is composed mainly of helium and hydrogen. The planet has no moons, and its magnetic field is weak compared to Earth's. Mercury is difficult to observe from Earth because it is always close to the Sun in the sky.
